Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum – St. Michaels, Maryland

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is Full of Entertainment and Education. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is located on Chesapeake Bay in St. Michaels Maryland. Spread across 18 acres, the museum houses many artifacts, exhibits, and vessels dealing with the maritime history of the region.

The museum has a number of different exhibits that teach visitors about the Bay and the people who lived there and made their livelihoods from the sea. Visitors can see more than 100 boats and models, as well as artwork and historical artifacts. Guests will find plenty to see, and they will get to take in the natural beauty of Chesapeake Bay as well.

Bay History Building

Here you can learn about the history of the area, starting with the Native Americans who named the bay Chesapeake, through the first English explorers, the American Revolution, and the Civil War and beyond.

Small Boat Collection

You can view a variety of different kinds of small boats here, some dating from the 1800s. Some of the most popular types of craft were the Pocomoke, Tilghman, and Poquoson. You will also see some simple crabbing and fishing vessels as well.

Waterman’s Wharf

The Waterman’s Wharf is a replica of a crabber’s shanty. This interactive exhibit allows visitors to try some of the harvesting activities used for seafood. Everyone will have a good time with these activities.

Floating Fleet

This is one of the most popular areas of the museum. It is a huge collection of vessels, which are docked at Navy Point. One of the best known ships here is the Edna E. Lockwood, which happens to be a National Historical Landmark.

Hooper Straight Lighthouse

You can also visit the Hooper Straight Lighthouse, which was built in 1879. You can see where the keeper and his family stayed and learn about how they lived.

Admission to the museum is $13 for adults, $10 for seniors 62 and over, $6 for children between 6 and 17. Kids under 6 are free. Hours of operation vary depending on the time of year.
