National Great Blacks in Wax Museum - Baltimore
One of the most unique museums in America can be found in Baltimore, Maryland. The National Great Blacks in Wax Museum focuses solely on education and preservation regarding African American history. It was established in 1983 by Dr. Elmer Martin and Dr. Joanne Martin. Since its inception, it has quickly grown to become a great attraction for the City of Baltimore and for the entire state of Maryland.
The museum started with just a 1,200 square foot space, but word of mouth soon had tour groups from all over the country visiting. In 1985, the museum was awarded a matching $100,000 grant. A huge fundraising campaign ensured that amount was met. It's seen tremendous growth ever since. By 1989 about 43,000 visitors came in every year. Today about 300,000 people come through the museum's doors on an annual basis.
A number of incredible exhibitions keep people mesmerized during any trip to the Great Blacks in Wax Museum. These include, "A Journey to Freedom," "The Slavery Era," and "The Magnificence of Africa." It highlights people and events from the beginning of civilization all the way to modern-day African leaders like Nelson Mandela. Entertainers, writers and athletes are all showcased in this museum.
Additionally, daily tours run during the spring and summer for an even more in-depth learning experience. These include the Renaissance Grand Tour which features significant places in Maryland's African American History. The tour stops at places like the Orchard Street Church and St. Francis Academy.
