Scenic Western Maryland Railroad – Cumberland

There is nothing quite as charming as a traditional steam train rolling through the countryside. It adds a nostalgic feel. Perhaps this is why the Scenic Western Maryland Railroad in Cumberland, Maryland has enjoyed such enormous popularity. People just can’t seem to get enough of this old-fashioned adventure!

One of the most well-liked train rides through this company is the Standard Excursion train ride. With it you get to ride on the 1916 Baldwin 2–8–0, Mountain Thunder, or their restored diesel engine. You’ll get a breath-taking view of the Allegheny Mountains and a narrator onboard will be able to tell you all about the history of the area. This train ride leaves at 11:30 a.m. and gets back around 3 p.m. There is a snack and gift shop onboard and most seats are situated near large windows so that you can have premium views of everything passing you by. A 1 ½ stop in Frostburg lets you enjoy some lunch and do some shopping. You can also visit the Thrasher Carriage Museum if you so choose. If you’re really adventurous, you can bring along your bike and cycle back! Because this excursion is so popular, reservations are highly recommended.

If you want more than just a regular train ride, why not explore one of the murder mystery train packages? This thrilling adventure offers 18 mysteries each year and provides dinner, a cash bar and, of course, plenty of entertainment. These run June through December and usually last about 3 ½ hours. Advanced reservations are a must and five days notice is required so that the crew can make all the necessary arrangements. Although children are allowed on these rides with their parents, the themes are geared towards adult audiences. Rates for this ride are $75 per person.

One step further is specialty train rides. These are a true treat that provide a one-of-a-kind experience. For $175 you can ride in the cab of the locomotive and experience everything an engineer does. Riders must be 16 years or older and wear long pants. Another great experience is to rent the caboose! This costs $325 and offers you quite an unusual view. The caboose can fit between 12 and 15 riders. The final specialty ride is one of the very best – the Santa Express! Travel to Frostburg with Jolly Saint Nick and feast on candy canes, hot chocolate and cookies!

The train depot is located at 13 Canal Street in Cumberland about 2 ½ hours from Baltimore.
